How 106 student bedspaces helped ease pressure on London's housing supply

Maddox Planning secured planning permission on appeal for 106 purpose-built student accommodation bedspaces at Blount Street in Tower Hamlets.

The scheme proposed the regeneration of a former industrial site in a highly accessible part of London. Its planning case demonstrated how well-located PBSA can make more effective use of underused urban land while contributing towards London’s need for student accommodation.

Although PBSA does not provide conventional self-contained housing, it forms part of the wider housing solution. Providing dedicated, professionally managed homes for students can reduce competition for shared private rented accommodation and help retain family-sized homes in general residential use.

The appeal decision enabled the site to be brought forward for student accommodation and demonstrated how PBSA can contribute to housing supply as part of the regeneration of sustainable urban sites.
